Casablanca is the perfect place to start your Casablanca Morocco itineraries. It is considered the economic and commercial center of Morocco, and is the perfect time to discover the largest city in the kingdom. The Morocco Tourism team has created a series of Casablanca excursions to give you an overview of our Morocco excursions.
The Hassan II Mosque is a mosque located in Casablanca that is the pride of all Moroccans, especially the inhabitants of Casablanca.
With partial views of the sea, erected like a throne, this monument covers an area of nine hectares. It includes a prayer room, an ablution room, baths, a Koranic school, a library and even a museum.
Built during the reign of His Majesty King Hassan II, it took seven years of work to complete. The late Hassan II gave birth to a masterpiece that ranks sixth on the list of the largest mosques in the world.
It is also called the people’s mosque because, at the time of its construction, His Majesty King Hassan II asked Moroccans for donations. Everyone contributed without reservation, which means that the mosque belongs to all Moroccans.
Casablanca is a modern city located on the seafront and has everything to please. The Corniche, which stretches for several kilometres, is a long and very pleasant avenue along which you can stroll or run from the lighthouse to the end of the pier, enjoying a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean.
There is a wide range of options: cafés, restaurants, ice cream parlours, luxury hotels, playgrounds, leisure centres (Sindibad), shows, nightclubs, cinemas, all at affordable prices. Taking the Boulevard du Lido, you reach the Anfa district, an authentic and very popular part of the city.
Mohammed V Square is the administrative centre of Casablanca. The modern architecture of the white city surrounding Mohammed V Square is the perfect reflection of this. Built in 1920, the square houses a series of impressive monuments. Starting with the buildings of Marshal Lyautey built after the First World War: the French consulate, the post office and bank, the courthouse and the town hall.
The square was redesigned to be in harmony with the grand theatre project, featuring a central musical fountain with an underground car park and a mineral square.
The Medina of Casablanca is the oldest part of the metropolis. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, it is quite recent compared to the medinas of other imperial cities and stands out for its architecture that mixes Arab-Moorish and colonial styles. Access is via the famous “Bab Marrakech”, one of the seven gates of the medina. It houses a bustling market with a variety of leather goods and clothing. For some years now, the medina has been home to an African market nicknamed “Little Dakar”, which sells consumer goods from sub-Saharan countries.
Outside the walls, you will find a succession of bazaars and shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs to take home in the alleyway that leads to the Casa-Port train station. Not far from the port, a new shopping centre, “Marina Shopping“, has just opened.
