The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers since the Neolithic period, but the current city was founded in 1070-1072 by the Almoravids (1056-1147). Some grandiose monuments date back to this period: the Koutoubiya mosque, the Kasbah, the ramparts, the monumental gates, the gardens, etc. Later, other wonders were added to the city, such as the Bandiâ Palace, the Ben Youssef medersa, the Saâdian tombs, large mansions, etc. The Jamaâ El Fna square, a true open-air theatre, continues to amaze visitors!
